LED technology has made great strides over the years. TylerLight is currently focused on taking advantage of these new technologies to benefit both the clients’ needs, business needs, and the environment. Not only does LED provide a better overall quality product, which we will go through below, but it provides other indirect benefits as well.
The ETC Source Four Ellipsoidal has been an impressive fixture for over 20 years. It has actually improved the lighting industry as a whole. While ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls) is very good at marketing, the product behind the marketing is actually a very good product all around. It is very durable, provides for adaptation, is efficient in many ways, low maintenance costs, and consistent. The ETC Source Four Ellipsoidal is at a time now where it almost may become a thing of the past, well, at least the originally tungsten version which we are talking about here. TylerLight continues to offer these fixtures in the rental inventory since they still provide wonderful value to our clients.
The LED replacement for the ETC Source Four Ellipsoidal is the Chauvet Ovation E-910FC. These fixtures were chosen since they provide a very broad palette of color, including a new Lime LED source, which renders more pastel colors when mixed with other colors. It also has an Amber LED source, which picks up more of the yellow and orange colors. These colors can be mixed via standalone mode (with the menu on the rear of the fixture) or via a DMX control. Being able to mix colors like this enables for a more vivid lighting display, all while eliminating the need for colored gels (which is needed for the ETC Source Four Ellipsoidal), color scrollers (strips of different colors of gel that scroll with usually noisy motors and parts in from of the fixtures lens), or colored dichroic glass. Also to note that eliminating these colors gels and other apparatuses saves money, and the environment. You can now with the Chauvet Ovation FC Ellipsoidal E-910FC esily scroll through many colors, effortlessly, easily, and with no noise. As far as this Chauvet Ovation FC Ellipsoidal E-910FC comparing to a traditional black-body radiant (like the ETC Source Four above) it has very good color temperature outputs and compares very well with the ETC Source Four. The Chauvet Ovation FC can emit color temperatures from 2800 K to 6500 K, which makes it perfect for a wide variety of theatrical and film applications, and also eliminates the need for color correcting gels that are typically needed in the ETC Source Four Ellipsoidal. One of the large benefits seen from the client’s perspective is the clarity of gobos. Since the LED source is much more focused, and more directional and perfected, the outcome is more clear. You can see even without a donut in the Chauvet Ovation Ellipsoidal, you have more clarity than a donut enhanced ETC Source Four Leko on the left. The gobos used are both the same.

As you can see from the above 3 images, it seems to be a no brainer why not to go with the Chauvet E-910FC Ellipsoidal for your next event. We still do recommend, until further testing is completed, that you use the traditional ETC Source Four for small stage washes, but for gobos and color we definitely recommend using the Chauvet E-910FC Ellipsoidal.
