A Creative Way to Light an Event Tent

The TYLERLIGHT team had the opportunity to upgrade the lighting system at the TradeWinds Island Grand Pavilion. The existing installation created several challenges, so we redesigned the system around three priorities: better functional lighting, reduced glare, and simpler operation for the venue team.
Understanding What the Venue Actually Needed
Before selecting fixtures, we first looked at how the pavilion was actually being used. Brightness, glare, weatherproofing, maintenance, and ease of operation all mattered because this is a large event environment near the ocean.
The existing functional downlighting relied on RGB LED fixtures even though the venue primarily needed bright, dependable white illumination for everyday use. That added unnecessary complexity to a basic lighting task.
TYLERLIGHT chose dedicated high-efficiency white LED downlights for the functional house-lighting system. The goal was simple: provide reliable, even illumination without forcing venue staff to operate a complex color-changing system every time they needed white light.
Using the Pavilion Structure to Our Advantage
The timing of the project worked especially well because the pavilion’s ceiling fabric had already been lowered for cleaning. That exposed the roof structure and gave us direct access to the locations where the new lighting fixtures needed to be secured.
Rather than treating the fabric ceiling as an obstacle, we incorporated it into the final lighting design. Once the draping was returned to position, the fabric helped conceal the fixtures while allowing the light to spread throughout the pavilion.
Reducing Glare With Diffused House Lighting
One of the problems we needed to solve was glare. A directly visible fixture can create an uncomfortable, distracting light source—especially in a large event environment where guests may be looking across the room for long periods of time.
We positioned the fixtures between the structural ceiling and the pavilion draping. The thin white fabric then acts as a large diffuser, spreading the illumination rather than exposing the bright LED source directly.
The result is smoother functional illumination with fewer visible hot spots and a cleaner ceiling appearance. The fixtures largely disappear from normal view while still providing the practical light the venue needs.
By separating functional white lighting from decorative event lighting, the pavilion gains a system that is easier to operate and more flexible for different types of events.
Even Illumination Across the Pavilion
The panoramic view below shows the completed functional lighting system with only the white house lights in use. Instead of isolated pools of light, the ceiling fabric helps distribute the illumination throughout the room.
For a venue, this matters just as much as visual impact. Permanent lighting needs to be practical, dependable, maintainable, and easy for staff to use from one event to the next.
Adding a Separate Color-Changing System
The venue also wanted the ability to change the mood of the pavilion for weddings, corporate events, celebrations, and other productions.
Instead of asking one fixture system to perform two very different jobs, we separated the decorative lighting from the functional white house lighting.
Twelve outdoor-rated Elation SixPar LED fixtures were installed along the center of the pavilion ceiling. These fixtures provide programmable color while the dedicated house-light system remains available for practical white illumination.
This is the same principle TYLERLIGHT uses when planning professional corporate event lighting and venue installations: each part of the lighting system should have a clear purpose.
Making the Lighting Easy for the Client to Operate
The previous color system relied on computer-controlled DMX operation. It was capable, but it was also more complicated than the venue needed for everyday use.
We replaced that workflow with a Doug Fleenor Preset 10 controller. The wall-mounted panel gives the venue simple push-button access to programmed lighting scenes.
Staff can select predefined colors without opening software or programming fixtures. Multiple presets can also be combined to produce additional color options.
For the functional white lighting, a separate 0–10-volt dimming system provides straightforward, reliable control.
A good permanent lighting installation should not only look good—it should make the client’s day-to-day operation easier.
Better Lighting Without Unnecessary Complexity.
The completed pavilion now has dependable functional illumination, programmable color-changing event lighting, improved glare control, and a much simpler operating system.
It’s a good example of what TYLERLIGHT looks for in every installation: not simply adding more fixtures, but designing the right lighting system for the way the property is actually used.
