Halloween and… LIGHTING! 🎃

How can we neglect lighting during a Halloween event? Even though Halloween parties and events normally take place in dark or nighttime environments, that makes the right lighting even more important. Here are a few creative ways lighting can completely transform your next Halloween event.

Atmosphere

Use Haze!

Haze and fog can add an entirely different dimension to a Halloween event. Haze makes beams of light visible in the air while helping mask areas of a venue and create the eerie atmosphere Halloween events need.

Even a plain ballroom can feel completely different once the bright house lights are turned off and haze, color, and theatrical lighting effects take over.

You can even add another dimension with scented haze or fog. Depending on the theme, scents can help create environments inspired by forests, swamps, smoke, fire, and other spooky settings.

UV Lighting

Make a Glowing Impression!

UV and blacklight effects cause fluorescent colors and materials to glow dramatically.

UV lighting—better known as blacklight—is especially effective for Halloween events. While blacklights are also popular for glow parties and nighttime activities, Halloween is where they can really transform an environment.

With traditional house lighting reduced, UV light can illuminate fluorescent and glow-in-the-dark materials throughout an event. That can include centerpieces, hanging décor, costumes, face paint, dinnerware, napkins, props, and other themed elements.

You can even involve your guests before the event. Encourage them to incorporate fluorescent materials or UV-reactive paint into their costumes so they become part of the lighting experience when they arrive.

Projection Lighting

Use Patterns!

GOBO projection is one of the most efficient ways to add a tremendous amount of visual theming to an event without physically building every scenic element.

Instead of constructing a brick wall, for example, TYLERLIGHT can project a brick pattern onto a ballroom wall, airwall, scenic flat, or other suitable surface. Patterns can create brick, fire, abstract textures, Halloween imagery, and countless other visual effects.

Patterns can also be projected across considerable distances using theatrical fixtures such as Lekos and ellipsoidals. TYLERLIGHT has used everything from simple texture breakups to elaborate themed graphics to transform large venue surfaces.

For one Halloween event at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, we projected textured patterns across the ceiling and combined them with pink and purple uplighting. The result gave the venue a much deeper and more dramatic atmosphere without requiring permanent scenic changes.

Projected patterns can be static or dynamic. A brick texture might remain stationary on a wall, while another GOBO can rotate slowly or quickly. Moving fixtures can add even more patterns, textures, beams, and motion through the air.

Combine those effects with haze and professional stage lighting , and the lighting becomes an active part of the Halloween environment rather than simply illuminating it.
